Raw or aged wood floors: the charm of the authentic

Frank knots, hand-planed surfaces, total matteness: why the sharpest interiors are returning to wood that looks like wood.

Séjour rustique moderne au parquet oak vieilli raboté main

For twenty years, wood flooring tried to be forgotten: smooth, regular, knot-free, without reflection or relief. The pendulum is swinging back. In recent renovations — and not only in the countryside — it is the wood that owns being wood that seduces: frank knots, hand-planed or saw-marked surfaces, ultra-matte finishes that let the hand feel the material.

Raw, brushed, aged: three intensities

  • The raw look: invisible lacquer or colourless oil on barely sanded oak — the wood seems fresh from the workshop. The perfect backdrop for pared-back interiors.
  • Brushed: the brush digs out the soft wood and leaves the grain in relief — barefoot, the floor has texture. Very forgiving day to day.
  • Aged: hand-planed, softened edges, sometimes smoked — the board tells of thirty years it never lived. In an old house it erases the border between existing and new.

The grade makes the style

The same oak changes personality with the selection: a calm, low-knot grade leans towards quiet elegance; a rustic grade — open knots, sapwood, colour variation — towards the family house. Neither is «better»: an industrial loft often calls for more character than a Haussmann flat. Our advice: decide grade and finish together, on a sample, in the room's own light.

What it lives well with

Stone, linen, wool, black metal, leather: aged wood likes honest materials. It also handles open kitchens and entrances very well — the marks of life blend in instead of standing out (see wear classes and traffic). And in a whole-house project it pairs naturally with rendered walls and character renovations — our renovation series covers the rest of the site.

Character lives in our Rustic collection (200+ references) and in the period patinas of the Heritage collection; solid-wood purists will visit the Solid collection.
